The worst launch video o have ever seen and the responses were scathing. Felt sorry for the guy trying to to run it. No demo of the software and no real detail on what makes it worth the subscription and what happens to those who have purchased the current version. I have a real soft spot for audirvana having used it for a long time and interacted with Damien when required but I suspect they will lose a lot of their current customers.

Yep, the move to a subscription model will kill it for me, especially at the prices quoted. As others have mentioned above, I will stay on 3. Adobe frustratingly did this with Lightroom so I just stayed with the last licensed version. Maybe they will try this model and possibly realise too late that they have shot themselves in the foot. Audirvana support is poor and not very good resolving app bugs.

They never made 3. The advantage is a lower price than roon for some users in subscription price. I do not believe at the moment they can offer a more complete experience and integration with all our devices than roon. A streamer is a computer! So is whatever anyone uses to run Roon. And it is effectively silent it has a low-speed fan which I find in a quiet room is inaudible more than 30cm away.

But whilst cheaper than Roon, the subscription model rules future Audirvana out for people like me who want something self-contained and free of ongoing cost. I do not subscribe to any online streaming service partly for the same reason. It depends what you mean by options.

Hopefully I will have the option of keeping the present version of Audirvana, frozen. Otherwise I have the even older version mothballed. I used to recommend Audirvana on a Mac Mini based on its exemplary sound quality as a renderer, but I think this change will end that. Also have a Audirvana 3. But if we look at most software payed upgrades are on an yearly base, not much different from subscription, the most negative is that if you stop paying you loose the possibility of using your software totally.

And with a normal license we at least can continue using the app if we do not choose to upgrade. My experience with Audirvana 3. Oh dear. I think they are going to shoot themselves in the foot. I am by no means the only one using Audirvana – indeed I first learnt about it through other forum members….

Anyway: I use Audirvana on a Mac Mini, using it as a renderer player – which is different from its use as a UPnP server, a relatively recent function it now offers. My reason for using it is sound quality – when I first learnt of it, it seemed to be widely reputed to be the best sounding renderer you can get on a computer. But it does have limitations: the recently introduced sort by file location facility has improved it, but currently is not available through the Audirvana remote control app, but only on the main program – which I control remotely using VNC, and VNC control from a tablet or phone is not as streamlined as controlling with the app.

I use none of these. This requires El Capitan IOS software, not later, otherwise requires a kernel work-around because Apple blocked the ability to use direct mode in later OSs. It is a combined music store and player, with no network in use when playing music. However it has a very good reputation from what i heard.

I find JRiver MC better in this respect. Sonically I cannot tell them apart in my Chord system. JRiver does not support Tidal or Qobuz so if you need these then it may not be for you. It may support Amazon HD soon. JRiver will handled photos and films if that is of interest. I use it in Audio only mode. JRiver has an excellent remote which works on almost any device with a web browser. It supports zones and you can set parameters such as room correction for each zone.

JRiver has more features, but you may not need them. As a UPnP server the sound quality advantage of Audirvana as a renderer is lost, and the only thing thing it has going for it that few others have is the incorporation of Tidal, Qobuz and HiRezAudio online streaming, including first MQA unfold on tidal, for anyone interested in those.

And some people have reported a mismatch with Naim streamers and Audirvana as UPnP server, possibly because it is not a straightforward fileserver. Rjt36 : I keep it as a backup, and benchmark, because it genuinely sounds great — better than the same Mac playing from iTunes. I play from backups stored on a USB-attached hard drive.
